Masters Of Albion has been a hot topic recently – the game is looking great, the premise is solid, but many fans have such little faith in it’s Director – Peter Molyneux.
In the past, Peter’s games have been both impressive, and disappointing – sometimes even the same game has covered both categories.
Some may remember the earlier days of PC gaming, when Populous released, regarded by many as the first “God Game”, it went on to have several expansion packs and even 2 sequels, the last of which – Populous: The Beginning I owned myself and even have a copy on Steam that I occasionally wander back to, and these games bring back fond memories of discovery and awe in gaming as a child.

In recent years though, fans have been left excited, and yet somehow disheartened at the way some of Peter’s more recent games have gone. Coming out of 22cans, we’ve seen Godus, Godus Wars, and The Trail, the most successful of which was Godus, although despite years of development and a very successful kickstarter, it never left Steam Early Access and eventually Steam removed both Godus and Godus Wars from the Steam Store.
Peter could be set for an impressive come-back though, with Masters Of Albion – a god game, but one that blends with RPG elements. You assume the role of Big Hand – helping your villagers make weapons, grow food and build. seems quite pleasant so far, the real problems begin at night though, when undead zombies come looking for food, or a fight. You get to control your villagers, place them where needed, move defensive towers around, and if all that isn’t enough, you can take control of one of your villagers and get stuck into the fight yourself.
It’s not all about building and fighting though! You can take control villagers during the day too, and run around collecting items or going off on quests, hell, you can even assume the role of the village’s pet dog and run around Albion. See for yourself in the official reveal trailer…
It’s pretty safe to say this game is looking quite impressive so far, so many capabilities, blending different elements of gameplay mechanics into something really unique, the building aspect alone is worth diving into, seeing how you can make the village work for the situation, and if the games narration follows the same humour as the trailers, I think Peter might be on to a winner!
Anyway, once you’ve had your fill of the reveal trailer, check out the extended gameplay trailer and you might just see why I think 22cans might have cracked the code with this one!
While waiting for Masters Of Albion to release, why not take a look at these other titles? Marathon is an upcoming contender for Arc Raiders, and you’ll be able to play for free at the end of Feb. Epitome is an in development MMO set for release in 2027 & failing that, Sony’s State Of Play Event smashed it with reveals this year!
